Proceedings

  • Meeting called to order at 7:30am. Introductions were held.
  • Guest Speakers – Robin & Victor – State Farm Special Investigations
    • They discussed the various forms of insurance fraud and how it affects businesses
      • Hard Fraud – Destroying property, theft, etc…
      • Soft Fraud – Padding claims
    • Oregon currently has no insurance fraud legislation, meaning no punitive penalties
    • Fraud costs the insurance industry $120 billion per year and it’s increasing!
    • They discussed what triggers a special investigation
      • Generally claims are flagged by agents or claims reps
    • SIU generally reviews 5-10% of all claims made
  • Business Spotlight – Garrison Law Group
    • Melissa and Katrina introduced their firm and what they do
    • They are a full-service law firm currently staffed by 3 attourneys
    • They are moving soon to the Sunnybrook/205 area
  • City Update
    • Upcoming Art Contest – “What is Home?”
      • May 24th through May 27th
      • Submissions will be from local 7th – 12th graders
      • The display will be at City Hall
    • 4th of July committee
      • Steve is looking for volunteers to help man the committee to determine options for this year’s event
      • We are looking at a new venue and possibly a carnival
    • America’s Got Talent is auditioning at the Oregon Convention Center 2/28-3/1
    • Crime update – Recoded Credit Cards
      • Detective Millet discussed how recoded credit cards are becoming an issue. People are stealing credit card numbers and writing them onto the magnetic strips of their own credit or debit cards
      • Please make sure you are checking the numbers that print on the actual credit receipt and comparing them to the number printed on the card
      • Gift Card Fraud is also on the rise. Criminals are now copying gift card numbers and keeping them to check online for when they are charged
      • Vehicle and Home Thefts – please report any suspicious persons to 911 immediately. These thefts happen FAST.
  • Announcements
    • Welcome wagon packets are now going out!
      • They will be going to all new households in Happy Valley
      • Ads from HVBA members will be included at no cost as a benefit of membership
      • Keep an eye on your email for a notification
    • Upcoming Joint Event – Providence/HVBA/NC Chamber of Commerce
      • We will be holding a joint event to promote business in the area
      • It will be March 31st at the new Providence Center
    • Happy Valley Town Center Art Walk
      • 1st Saturday in August at Vintner’s Cellar
      • Local artisans will be displaying their artwork
    • New Season’s is having a huge sale to celebrate their 10th anniversary!
    • West Coast Bank Dog Day is March 30th from 2-4pm
  • Meeting adjourned at approximately 9am
