Proceedings

  • Meeting called to order at 7:30am. Introductions were held.
  • Guest Speakers – Clackamas County Commissioner – Charlotte Lehan
    • Charlotte discussed doing business in our tough economic times
    • She used to be the Mayor of Wilsonville so she has a lot of experience in municipal environments
    • She stressed the importance of the commute on I-5
      • This takes up a lot of freight space so this pushes a lot of economic development out to more outlying areas, such as Happy Valley
    • She stated that the future of Clackamas County is bright due to our location and connections
    • She stated that our mix of homes and businesses is off and we’re missing out on a lot of money since we don’t have much of a business sector
    • At this point Jason Tuck addressed the zoning issues Happy Valley has faced and asked how to bring more businesses in
    • Charlotte stated the County Commission is on board with this and working to bring more unincorporated areas into the city, or to create another city entirely
    • Also she addressed some of the changes with the Sunrise Corridor and how improvements have helped even though transportation funding is dwindling
  • Business Spotlight – Take Shape for Life
    • Rich and his wife Barb introduced themselves and the business
    • Childhood obesity is their main concern
    • 70% of bankruptcies are due to healthcare costs
    • 40% of premature death is due to lifestyle choices
    • Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death and the leading cause of blindness
    • Ric’s motivation started with his own open heart surgery!
    • They’ve started free classes – Habits for Health
      • The only cost is materials
      • These classes start in April
      • They are focused on helping people change their lifestyle habits
    • This is a natural program designed to help you lose weight quickly, but in a healthy manner
    • The program is certified and backed by Johns Hopkins University
  • City Update
    • Police Update:
      • Clackamas Emergency Services Foundation spoke
        • They work to help people who have had tragedies in life such as fires, etc.
        • They will be hosting a function at the Oregon Golf Club soon
      • Officer Davis is calling businesses to check in about police services and also following up with crime victims
      • Spring break is upon us – be vigilant!
    • There is a Neighborhood Summit April 28th from 7pm-9pm
      • All available government reps will meet with any citizens
      • HVBA will be there
  • Announcements!
    • Nametags are now available for $15 each
    • Volunteer opportunities! We need members to help serve on various committees
    • HVBA Facebook is now live! Search for “Happy Valley Business Alliance” on Facebook or click the link on www.hvba.biz
    • Board Elections are coming up for the new term starting July 1st
    • There is a new shuttle starting April 5th that will run from Clackamas Town Center to Clackamas Community College called the Town Center Express
    • The Northwest Aquatic Center is now in full swing! Stop by!
    • Next month we will have a guest speaker discussing how to market through local media
